Winnipeg Rifles

Winnipeg Rifles

Winnipeg Rifles are a Canadian football team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They began playing in the Canadian Junior Football League in 2002. They play at Canad Inns Stadium, home of the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

History

Junior football in Winnipeg dates back to the 1920's, with the formation of the Manitoba Junior Football League. In 1953, teams from Winnipeg began playing in the CJFL. The most successfull is the Winnipeg Rods, who previously won 3 CJFL Championships. Those teams eventually either disestablished or merged. The Winnipeg Hawkeyes were the last Winnipeg-based team before the Rifles, shutting down in 1996. In 1999, an effort began to bring back a team to Winnipeg, headed by James Ladd who later had to leave the board due to illness. The Rifles were established in 2002. The team is named after the Royal Winnipeg Rifle Regiment.
