Abruzzo regional election, 2008

A regional election will take place on 30 November–1 December 2008 in Abruzzo, due to the early resignation (the last election was held in 2005) of President Ottaviano Del Turco, after his indictment for alleged corruption. There are rumors that the main candidates will be three: one supported by The People of Freedom (PdL) and the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats (UDC), one by the Democratic Party (PD) and one by Italy of Values (IdV). PD local and national leaders tried to form a coalition with UDC and IdV, but the first seems headed to an alliance with PdL, while IdV, which has one of its strongholds in the area (IdV leader Antonio Di Pietro comes from neighbouring Molise), has decided to run with its own candidate, Carlo Costantini. IdV seems also keen on an alliance with the parties of the far left, such as the Communist Refoundation Party and the Party of Italian Communists, in order to surpass the PD.
