Canon Law Society of America

The Canon Law Society of America is a professional association dedicated to the promotion of both the study and the application of canon law in the Catholic Church. The Society's membership includes over fifteen hundred men and women who reside in forty-three countries. Not all members are Catholic.

History

A group of canonists established the Canon Law Society of America on November 12, 1939 in Washington, DC as a professional association, dedicated to the promotion of both the study and the applicationof canon law in the Catholic Church. The Socity remains active in study and the promotion of canonical and pastoral approaches to significant issues within the Catholic Church, both the Latin or Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches. Since Vatican Council II, the Society has offered its services in the United States for the revitalization and proper application of church law. Membership

Membership in the society is open to interested persons who with to collaborate in the promotion of the pastoral ministry of the Church within the context of its legal/canonical structures. Membership of non-Catholic persons is welcome.

Institutions such as libraries and communities of consecrated life or societies of apostolic action desiring an associate membership are invited to sponsor an individual person for active or associate membership. This will provide for regular receipt of Society mailings and other membership benefits.

Board of Governors

The Society organizes its activities through an annual general meeting, at which time it elects officers and determines resolutions for future study and activity by the Society. A "Board of Governors" oversees the operations of the Society. The Board is composed of elected officers: president, vice-presidents who is president-elect, an immediate past president, a secretary, a treasurer, and six consultors.

Committees

The Society organizes its study and activities around three types of committees. There are "constitutional committees" created by the Society's constitution. "On going committees" carry out tasks deemed essential to the ongoing life of the Society. "Project committees" are created for a specific task.

Office of the Executive Coordinator

An executive coordinator, appointed from the active membership of the Society by the Board of Governors for a three year term of service, serves the membership and the Board of Governors under the direction of the President and the Board of Governors. The Office of the Executive Coordinator assists the operations of the Society on a daily basis. The Executor's task includes publication of the quarterly newsletter; maintaining the Society's web page, and implementation of the directives of the Board of Governors, particularly with respect to the annual general meeting and the publication services of the Society.

Activities

In an effort to promote a better understanding of church law and its pastoral application, the Society convenes an annual convention and other symposia. Collaboration with other professional church organizations and learned societies is another area of the Society's involvements.

The Society also holds annual regional meetings across the United States. This year the eastern regional meeting will be held at Rockville Center, NY; the western regional meeting will be held March 2-4, 2009 in Reno, NV; the midwest regional meeting will be held April 20-22 in Columbus, OH; the Texas regional meeting will be held in San Antonio. One of the main functions of the Society is the CLSA Publications office; they publish various books in order to promote greater understanding and application of canon law.
