The Red Wing Collectors Society is dedicated to the preservation of Red Wing and other American pottery since 1977. Red Wing Steoneware, Dinnerware and Art Pottery was manfactured in Red Wing, Minnesota beginning in the late 1880 until 1967 when the pottery ceased operation. The Red Wing potteries: Red Wing Stoneware, Minnesota Stoneware, North Star Stoneware, Union Stoneware Company, Red Wing Union Stoneware Company, and finally Red Wing Potteries, Inc. The potteries of Red Wing began their 90-year production run of clay ware in the late 1880 with stoneware, and added art pottery and dinnerware in the 1930s. Know for its diversity, Red Wing's wares include beautiful salt glaze, famous "Wing Crocks," detailed hand painted dinnerare sets and beautiful art pottery. These wares are very valuable collectibles, and can often time sell for high prices at auctions, antique shops, and flea market/show and sale venues. [Red Wing Collectors Society Website]

Organization History

The Red Wing Collectors Society (RWCS) was founded in 1977 with the birth of the Red Wing Collectors Society Newsletter, published by Dave Newkirk. The popularity of the RWCS Newsletter subscription and the publication of the "The Clay Giants" by Rev. Lyndon Veil laid the conerstone for a meeting of likeminded collectors to gather in Red Wing, MN in July 1977. It was at that one day event held at the Goodhue County Historical Society in July of 1977 that the RWCS officially became an organization. Those people who attended the event and joined the RWCS that day are considered Charter Members of the organization. of the 300-500 people that attended the event, just over 200 people became members and over 75 of those members are still active today.

The Red Wing Collectors Society holds the prestige of being in existence longer than most collecting organizations and in having the largest membership. From its birth the RWCS has been dedicated to keeping the Red Wing legacy alive. We thrive on continually learning about the pottery products made in Red Wing Minnesota and on making that information available to others.
