BlankOn Linux is a Linux distributions based on Ubuntu developed by Yayasan Penggerak Linux Indonesia (YPLI) and Komunitas Ubuntu Indonesia (Ubuntu-id.org).

Goals

BlankOn Linux goals is to provide a suitable operating system for the common PC users in Indonesia, especially in the schools/academic, corporate, and government sectors. BlankOn 2.0 has multimedia support such as mp3, vcd, and dvd, with Indonesian themes or graphics. BlankOn development is open with release cycle of once or twice a year.

Philosophy

BlankOn is a name of an ethnic head dress (hat) in Indonesia, especially the Javaness (Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java), Sundanese (West Java and Banten), Maduranese, Balinese.

BlankOn means also blank (binary number 0) and on (binary number 1) or digital hat (modern) with ancient (classic) appearance.

Another mean of the word BlankOn is the transformation from blank to on.

The BlankOn developers hopes that every BlankOn users can be transformed from "blank" to "filled", to have knowledge that Linux can be used to increase skills, dignity, and autonomy of the Indonesian people.

BlankOn is intended to be a motivator for the Indonesian people to use and develop Linux and other FOSS. BlankOn also means a crash helmet to software proprietary dependency.

After the launching of BlankOn version 1 based on [http://fedoraproject.org/ Fedora Core] , [http://ypli.or.id YPLI] and [http://www.ubuntu-id.org/ Komunitas Ubuntu Indonesia] dvevloped BlankOn version 2 (code name: "Konde") based on [http://www.ubuntu.com Ubuntu] Linux. BlankOn Linux version 1.0 and version 2.0 are sponsored by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and several other institutions.

YPLI

Yayasan Penggerak Linux Indonesia (or YPLI for short) is an organization that develop Linux software and brainware in Indonesia.

Ubuntu-id
