Judy Wajcman

Judy Wajcman is a sociologist working in the field of the social shaping of technology and gender in organisations.

She is a Professor of Sociology in the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University, a Visiting Professor at the Lehman Brothers Centre for Women in Business at London Business School, and a Visiting Professor at the Oxford Internet Institute. She was formerly a Centennial Professor in the Department of Sociology's Gender Institute at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and has previously held posts in Cambridge, Edinburgh, Manchester, Sydney, Tokyo, Vienna, Warwick and Zurich. She was also a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford.

Research

Her books include "Managing Like a Man: Women and Men in Corporate Management", "The Politics of Working Life" (co-authored with Paul Edwards) and "TechnoFeminism". She is also a co-editor of "The Handbook of Science and Technology Studies". Her work has been translated into French, German, Greek, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.

Professor Wajcman's current major project explores the impact of information and communication technologies, such as the mobile phone, on time poverty and work-family balance. The first report of this project: "The Impact of the Mobile Phone on Work/Life Balance".

In June 2008, she organised the “Humanising Work” event with Elisabeth Kelan at the Lehman Brothers Centre for Women in Business at London Business School. The groundbreaking seminar attempted to expose business academics and practicioners to current research and knowledge in the social sciences and saw two talks by (Lord) Anthony Giddens and Richard Sennett. Stefan Stern from the Financial Times likened this event to an academic version of the Rumble in the Jungle and referred to it as the "Dialectic in the Park" - a reference to London Business School's Regent's Park campus.
