Rose garden (horticulture)

Rose garden (horticulture)

A Rose garden or Rosarium is a garden or park, often open to the public, in which roses are grown. They are frequently used to present and grow various types of roses.

The first known rose garden was planted by empress Joséphine de Beauharnais in Malmaison. It is claimed that at her death, the garden included around 250 types of garden roses.

Rose breeding for commercial purposes started in the 19-th century. The important rose gardens created for commercial rose breeding were:

* "Roseraie du Val-de-Marne" in L'Haÿ-les-Roses, France
* "Dolná Krupá rosarium in Austria-Hungary (now Slovakia
* "Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen, Germany
