This episode reintroduces the characters[n 4], as General Clayton, considering breaking up the 4077th, sends Captain Hildebrand, a psychiatrist, to investigate the camp. Henry's attempts to make everyone get along, and thereby prevent the dissolution of his unit, are met with humorous results.

An inept North Korean pilot in an obsolete plane attempts (and fails) to bomb every day at exactly 5 o'clock the ammunition dump placed near the 4077th by dropping a small explosive from his plane. Major Burns decides a serious reaction is in order, so he requisitions an anti-aircraft gun and attempts to shoot the plane out of the sky, much to the chagrin of Hawkeye and Trapper who fear the gun might attract enemy fire.

Radar files a daily report to the Army detailing the events of the past day, including treating a Chinese soldier and the death of a soldier from infection after a fight in the OR involving the Chinese soldier. Trapper tries to control his anger at the Chinese soldier, who lies recovering in post-op while his patient is being sent home in a box. Frank, frustrated with Klinger's antics, tries to get Klinger's insanity discharge approved by the army.
Notes: This episode is Sidney Freedman[n 5]'s first appearance.

Hawkeye and Trapper John discover that the United States accidentally destroyed a nearby village due to errant artillery and is now trying to cover it up and rebuild the village as a gesture of goodwill. At the end Hawkeye receives an uncensored letter from his father dated May 24, 1951. 
5 29 "Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde" Jackie Cooper Alan Alda, Robert Klane October 18, 1973 (1973-10-18) K405
After being sleep-deprived for days, Hawkeye begins to act even more erratic than normal. General Clayton comes to the camp to investigate after Hawkeye sends a terse telegram to Harry Truman, asking "Who's responsible?" Unfortunately, he arrives just as Hawkeye launches his insane plan to bring peace by sending the camp latrine to North Korea.

A young Korean boy, apparently an orphan, arrives as a patient at the hospital and Trapper John wants to adopt him and send him to the United States, but the boy wanders into the middle of the camp's minefield, forcing a tense rescue attempt.

A Korean woman and an American soldier want to get married, which is normally impossible due to bigoted bureaucrats who must approve the union. Hawkeye decides to step in and help by blackmailing the bureaucrat in charge of the case. On the same night, he finds out that the nurse he is dating opposes interracial marriage. 
8 32 "The Trial of Henry Blake" Don Weis McLean Stevenson November 3, 1973 (1973-11-03) K408
Henry Blake is accused of aiding the enemy, and to prevent Hawkeye and Trapper John from getting evidence to exonerate him, Major Burns (in temporary command) confines them to quarters. Trapper and Hawkeye escape and go to the courtroom with proof that the North Koreans who Henry is accused of aiding were refugees and children at a civilian clinic near the border. Frank refuses to drop their charges, so Hawkeye and Trapper use what they know best to change his mind: blackmail.

Hawkeye writes another letter home talking about recent events, including operating on a soldier with an unexploded grenade embedded in him, and a tolerance lesson they taught to a bigoted soldier who does not wish to receive the "wrong color" blood.

The camp is under fire from a sniper in the nearby hills, and everybody tries to survive and stay sane while they cannot fight back. Hawkeye has to prevent Frank from letting his mock heroics get himself killed.

December 10, 1951: During a flu epidemic that is incapacitating everyone, Hawkeye and Margaret find themselves among the few personnel uninfected and able to keep working. Matters are complicated when Hawkeye catches the flu but must continue operating.

Hawkeye and Trapper John decide they need an incubator to help diagnose infections and have to fight the bureaucracy of the army to get one. There are three incubators available in Seoul, but the supply sergeant and base commander want more than the 4077th can afford.

As everybody gathers for the regular poker game (including visiting senior officers), a wounded intelligence agent is brought in to the operating room. Hawkeye must choose between standing orders against treating him (for fear the agent will divulge secrets under anesthesia) or saving his life. Radar accidentally runs over "Whiplash Hwang," a Korean who makes a career of faking injuries and filing personal injury lawsuits. This episode sees the first appearance of Lieutenant Colonel Flagg (after season 3, a Colonel), albeit under a different identity (possibly a pseudonym).
Notes: Loretta Swit does not appear in this episode. John Ritter guest stars as a soldier who takes Major Burns hostage to get home.

Fed up with her aimless affair with Frank Burns and the lack of discipline and professionalism at the 4077th, Margaret requests a transfer. The night before she is scheduled to leave, she becomes very drunk and says what she really thinks of some of her comrades (that she really likes them deep down) and realizes she should stay.

In gratitude for saving his son's life, a general gives the 4077th a prefabricated officers' club. Normal military protocol says it is restricted to officers only, much to the consternation of most camp personnel. Hawkeye and Trapper launch a plan to get the club opened up to everybody.

Henry returns from Tokyo after having fallen in love with a twenty-and-a-half year old girl and is seriously tempted to end his marriage. However, she develops a crush on Hawkeye, so Radar decides to take matters into his own hands to get Henry back on track.

Unable to obtain replacement army boots by regular means, Hawkeye launches an incredibly complex plan to get a new pair by filling the requests of a supply sergeant, the camp dentist, Col. Blake, Margaret Houlihan, Radar, Nurse Murphy, and Corporal Klinger, but it all depends on Frank Burns' willingness to cooperate during his surprise birthday party the camp reluctantly throws.

A soldier with severe morale problems because of his very large nose wants a nose job in violation of army regulations. Not known to pay attention to regulations, Hawkeye and Trapper launch a scheme to bring an esteemed plastic surgeon to the camp to give the soldier the nose job while simultaneously deceiving Majors Burns and Houlihan.

A Korean woman shows up with a baby she insists is Radar's, which surprises everybody, especially Radar. A Korean family moves into the compound and claims the land is their farm.

During a lull in the action, Frank Burns has to ask Hawkeye and Trapper to put down their gorilla outfits and fix his hernia. Henry gives an awkward and embarrassing lecture on VD to the amusement of the camp's enlisted men. When casualties resume, Father Mulcahy has to organize an impromptu blood drive.
Notes: At the end of the episode, the annoucement over the PA system mentions the pardon of Nazi war criminal Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach which actually occurred January 31, 1951.

During a cold spell, the supply lines of the 4077th have been cut, forcing the rationing of food, medical supplies and fuel. Everyone's sleeping quarters are also rearranged in order to conserve heat. This crowds certain areas such as the Swamp, which makes for a tricky slumber party that's less of a party and more of a stressful night of nuisance.

A decorated soldier arrives at the 4077th as the result of a fight and confides to Hawkeye that he is homosexual. Hawkeye and Trapper try to preserve his secret and prevent him from receiving a dishonorable discharge, courtesy of Frank.

At the camp's regular mail call, people react to various letters and packages they receive from home. Frank Burns is tricked into investing in a fictitious aviation company, proving that he reads other people's mail, while Trapper contemplates desertion after reading his letter from home. 
24 48 "A Smattering of Intelligence" Larry Gelbart Larry Gelbart, Laurence Marks March 2, 1974 (1974-03-02) K424
Two different American intelligence agents arrive at the camp (Captain Pratt and Lieutenant Colonel Flagg), and both appear to be trying to thwart each other and score federal funding for their rival espionage organizations. Hawkeye and Trapper decide to have some fun by tricking both spies into going after Frank Burns.
'Notes:' Although this is actor Edward Winter's second appearance on the show as a covert agent (he first appeared in the episode "Deal Me In" as Captain Halloran), this is his first "official" appearance as the character of Flagg.
