Singapore ArmyMajor-General Chan Chun Sing (simplified Chinese: 陈振声; traditional Chinese: 陳振聲; pinyin: Chén Zhènshēng, born 1969) is a Singaporean politician, and former Chief of the Singapore Army. He is the Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and the Minister of State for Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts.[2] He is also a Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency.
Major-General Chan was awarded the SAF Overseas Scholarship and President's Scholarship in 1988, a year after he joined the service, and previously held the position of Commander 9th Division/Chief Infantry Officer within the Army.[3][4] He was also awarded Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship in 2004.[5]
His alma mater include Raffles Junior College, the University of Cambridge, Christ's College, Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[6]
Chan served as the army chief from March 26, 2010 to March 25, 2011. He replaced then-Major-General Neo Kian Hong and was succeeded by Brigadier-General Ravinder Singh. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Army, he held the position of Chief of Staff — Joint Staff within the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Major-General Chan stood down from his position and retired from the SAF on March 25, 2011.[7]
Chan was a candidate for Singapore's People's Action Party in the general election of 2011, under Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency's[8] Buona Vista ward, replacing Lim Swee Say.[9] However, on Nomination Day, April 27, 2011, his team led by Lee Kuan Yew was returned without contest and elected to Parliament.[10]
