Embracing the Lake Chao, from which the city was named, Chaohu borders the provincial capital of Hefei to the northwest, Lu'an to the west, Anqing to the southwest, Tongling to the south, Wuhu to the southeast, and Ma'anshan and the province of Jiangsu to the east.
On August 22, 2011, Anhui province government announced in a controversial decision[1] that Chaohu was split into three parts and was absorbed by neighboring cities.[2] Juchao District was renamed to Chaohu as a county-level city under Hefei's administration.[3]
