Chase-down block

Chase-down block

The chase-down block is a type of block in basketball in which a player chases and then blocks the shot of an opponent player who had run ahead of the defense (as in a fast break). Often, the block involves hitting the ball into the backboard as the opponent tries to complete a lay-up.

This term was used for some of Miami Heat (formerly with the Cleveland Cavaliers) player LeBron James' blocks in the 2008–09 NBA season and at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. He had 23 of them in the 2008-09 season.[1][2] One of the most recognized chase-down blocks in recent years is Tayshaun Prince's game-saving block on Reggie Miller in Game 2 the 2004 NBA Eastern Conference Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons.[2]
