Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) are proteoglycans[1] consisting of a core protein and chondroitin sulfate. They are structural components of a variety of human tissues, for example of cartilage.

The following CSPGs have been identified:

  • CSPG1 (aggrecan)
  • CSPG2 (versican). Versican has chains of dermatan sulfate in addition to chondroitin sulfate.[2]
  • CSPG3 (neurocan)
  • CSPG4 (melanoma-associated chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan)
  • CSPG5
  • CSPG6 (SMC3, structural maintenance of chromosomes 3)
  • CSPG7 (brevican)
  • CSPG8 (CD44, cluster of differentiation 44)
