Chris Kelly is a member of the Democratic Party and ran for Attorney General of California in the 2010 election.

Early life and education
Kelly grew up in Santa Ana and San Jose, California, where he graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory in 1987. He earned a BA from Georgetown University in 1991, a master's degree in political theory from Yale University in 1992, and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1997.
Career
After graduating from Georgetown, Kelly worked on Governor Bill Clinton's campaign. Kelly began working as a policy advisor for the United States Domestic Policy Council and Department of Education during the Clinton administration. He focused on researching education and issues surrounding the formation of AmeriCorps.[2] After graduating from law school, Kelly clerked for a year for federal judge Barry Moskowitz.[2] Kelly worked in private practice with the firms Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Baker & McKenzie, and created the chief privacy officer position at Kendara, Excite@Home, and Spoke Software prior to joining Facebook in September 2005. As Facebook Chief Privacy Officer, he took the lead role for privacy issues as well as protecting the network from sex offenders. He left Facebook in March 2010.[3]
Facebook
At Facebook, Kelly's title was the Chief Privacy Officer.[4] As Chief Privacy Officer, Kelly was responsible for writing and explaining Facebook's privacy policy, as noted in The Times.[4]
During Kelly's tenure at Facebook, the controversial Facebook Beacon program was launched.
As Facebook privacy officer, Kelly was involved in protecting minors online. During a secret investigation, investigators from the New York Attorney General's office posted fake Facebook profiles for underage teens.[5] Both profiles were soon contacted by older men soliciting sex without being interfered with by Facebook authorities.[5] New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed Facebook's records, but within three weeks, Facebook settled the case.[6][1] Kelly told reporters, "This did start out as an investigation...but it has turned into a great cooperative effort that we hope the whole industry will follow."[7] Facebook agreed to speed it response time for complaints, while Attorney General Cuomo and involved advocacy groups praised Facebook's cooperation.[1] Cuomo called the end result a "successful conclusion."[7] Kelly gave subsequent interviews on the subject from his position as Facebook Chief Privacy Officer.[4]
In his role as Chief Privacy Officer of Facebook, Kelly began working with attorneys general across the nation who were investigating the issue.[2] During his campaign in 2010, Kelly prominently featured his work with all 50 attorneys general to protect minors online.[2]
Attorney General electoral bid
Main article: California Attorney General election, 2010On April 20, 2009, Chris Kelly announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the office of the Attorney General of California.[8] Kelly donated nearly $10 million to his own campaign.[9]
On May 25, 2010, an opposing campaign filed a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) which alleged that Chris Kelly’s campaign violated state election laws regarding an improper loan and disclosure.[10] The complaint was dismissed June 7, 2010, citing "insufficient evidence to warrant further investigation." [11]
Kelly lost the California Democratic primary to Kamala Harris.
Personal life
Kelly resides in Palo Alto, California with his wife Jennifer Carrico, an entrepreneur and former prosecutor, and their son, Aidan.[2]
