Chris Kilham

Chris Kilham (born July 22, 1952) is a medicine hunter, author, educator, and world-traveler devoted to researching and promoting plant-based medicines. He is the founder of Medicine Hunter, Inc., and is a Fox News integrative alternative medicine TV personality and columnist.[1] He is the author of 14 books, including The Five Tibetans,[2] Tales from The Medicine Trail,[3] Psyche Delicacies,[4] and Kava: Medicine Hunting in Paradise.[5] The New York Times has referred to Kilham as “part David Attenborough, part Indiana Jones."[6]

In 2010 Chris Kilham traveled to China’s remote Ningxia region, to see the Goji harvest. As a Medicine Hunter, Chris has witnessed the cultivation and harvesting of many plants around the world.

Medicine Hunter, Inc.

Medicine Hunter, Inc. was founded in 1994 to promote the research and use of natural, plant-based medicines. Kilham partners with companies to research, identify, and promote medicinal plants through books and articles, media, consulting, industry events, and speaking engagements. He leads field expeditions throughout the world to locate plants and to set up sustainable harvesting and/or cultivation methods and trade between indigenous peoples and partner companies. He is often described as a ‘bridger of worlds’.[7]

Kilham has promoted sustainability practices since his early work in the Natural Products Industry and continues this work through Medicine Hunter, Inc. The company defines their three dimensions of sustainability for medicinal plants as that they must: 1) improve human health, 2) be harvested in ways that do not degrade the environment, and 3) support the indigenous people of the plant’s region.[8]

Medicine Hunter, Inc.’s primary sponsor is Naturex, a France-based supplier of plant extracts and manufacturer of natural specialty ingredients. Kilham travels on the behalf of Naturex to research and select raw materials for its extracts. Kilham serves on the advisory board of the Naturex Foundation, which works to support the indigenous peoples in the places where the company sources plant materials. With Naturex, Kilham promotes sustainable environmental practices. His projects focus on harvesting plant material using methods that are safe for the environment and bring economy to the indigenous native peoples who harvest the plants. The Naturex projects enable native people to be directly involved in the economic production of plants with the intention of preserving natural spaces and traditional cultures. Areas of focus include the Amazon rainforest in Peru, the Peruvian Andes, Panama, Ecuador, and Vanuatu.[9]

Other current and past partner companies include HQ Productions, EuroPharma, Reserveage Organics, Enzymatic Therapy, and Fox News.[10] Kilham appears on Fox News as the Medicine Hunter and writes a weekly health column for FoxNews.com.[11] HQ Productions has traveled with Medicine Hunter to produce full length Fox News features on Tongkat Ali in Malaysia[12] and Maca in Peru.[13]

Kilham’s wife, Zoe Helene (born July 18, 1964), partners with him to run Medicine Hunter, Inc. Helene travels extensively with Kilham on expeditions. She conducts her own field research on the state of wilderness and wildlife, the arts of indigenous peoples, and women's and children’s rights.[14] An accomplished creative and communications professional in her own right, she produces medicinehunter.com, supports the company’s public and media appearances and often acts as liaison between journalists, producers, health and wellness luminaries, natural products industry leaders, and partner companies.[15]

Kilham and Helene were married on July 23, 2007.[16]

Plant Medicine Promotion

Kilham has conducted medicinal research in over 20 countries including India, China, Siberia, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Ghana, Syria, Lebanon, Vanuatu South Pacific, Malaysia, South Africa, Morocco, and the United States. He has been called one of “America’s Ultimate Experts” in natural medicine.[17] Kilham promotes medicinal plants through TV, radio, writing, speaking engagements, and his work with partner companies. Plants he’s played a key role in popularizing include:

  • Maca for energy and libido-boosting effects, fertility, and menopausal symptoms. Along with Naturex and Peru’s Chakarunas Trading, Kilham has worked to build sustainable Maca farming, trading and distribution channels in the Andean highlands.[9]
  • Ayahuasca as a profound body/mind healer and addiction treatment.[18]
  • Tamanu Oil as a topical healing agent for skin and nerves.[19]
  • Rhodiola rosea as an adaptogen for reducing cortisol levels, reducing stress, improving mental function, and enhancing libido.[20]
  • Tongkat Ali as an aphrodisiac and for balancing both male and female hormones.[21]
  • Dragon's blood for skin healing and antioxidant properties.[22]
  • Acai as a super-food and for antioxidant properties.[23]
  • Kava for psychoactive qualities, tranquility, and anti-anxiety. Kilham is the author of Kava, Medicine Hunting in Paradise.[5] The Wall Street Journal describes Kilham as a “one man public relations agency for the herb.”[24]
  • Cocoa as a super-food, antioxidant, protector of the cardiovascular system, and a “love drug.”[25]

Kilham is a regular contributor to Fox News as the Medicine Hunter, often appearing with Dr. Manny Alvarez and wearing a Hawaiian print shirt and/or an expedition jacket.[27] Medicine Hunter segments are played on Fox affiliate stations across the USA and over 100 countries.

Kilham’s expert work with aphrodisiacs, or “hot plants,"[28] has been featured on CNN,[29] The Dr. Oz Show,[30] Good Morning America,[31] and in the New York Times,[32] and Washington Post.[33] Kilham’s Top 10 Hot Plants are tongkat ali, rhodiola rosea, yohimbe, horny goat weed, ashwagandha, catuaba, zallouh, maca, ginseng, and eleuthero.[34] He also promotes cocoa as a “love drug,” stating that “chocolate alone actually promotes the brain chemistry of being in love.”[25]

With the company, Sambazon, Kilham also promotes the Amazon acai berry as a highly nutritious ‘superfruit’, rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Marketers of the so-called “acai diet” have used Kilham’s research to promote their products; however, Kilham gives an official position on the “acai diet” on Fox News Health,[35] stating “Acai is not a diet miracle Acai is no more of a diet than the eraser on your No. 2 pencil.”[36]

Cannabis Reform

Kilham is a public advocate for cannabis reform, the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, and the legalization/decriminalization of marijuana, stating his hope that “cannabis will find its proper place in the home medicine chest.”[37] Kilham writes regular articles on the topic for Fox News discussing cannabis reform, the U.S. patent 6.630.507 on cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants, and how those patents could potentially lead to government profits on the sale of marijuana.[38] He has made numerous television appearances with Dr. Manny Alvarez to discuss the health benefits of cannabis.

Natural Products Industry

Kilham is considered an expert, early leader, and key influencer[39] in natural products industry and sustainability arena. From 1985-1990, he was the Vice President of Marketing for Bread and Circus, a natural food store chain that became part of Whole Foods Market in 1992. He launched Cowboy Marketing in 1990, performing marketing consulting in the natural foods industry[40] for companies such as Whole Foods, Spectrum Naturals, Kiss My Face, Seventh Generation, and Muir Glen. Kilham also helped open Fresh Fields, a natural food supermarket chain in the Mid Atlantic region, which was also eventually bought by Whole Foods.[40] He details his experiences with the natural products industry in his book, Cowboy Marketing: How to Shoot from the Hip and Win on the Wild Frontier of Natural Foods Retailing.[41] Kilham also wrote The Whole Food Bible, which was featured in Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s The Perricone Promise.[42]

Shamanism and Sacred Plants

Kilham held the diplomatic post of Honorary Consul to the United States for the Republic of Vanuatu from 1997 through 2000,[43] and is recognized as a chief in the South Pacific] and Maxipe, or “black vulture,” among the Macuxi Indians in the Amazon.[44] He has traveled throughout Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Mexico, and North America studying shaman rituals and sacred plants. He researches and promotes psychoactive and psychedelic plants, including ayahuasca, cocoa, coffee, chiles, cannabis, magic mushrooms, peyote, and San Pedro cactus.[45] Kilham refers to ayahuasca as “the greatest natural healing agent, period.”[46] His book, Psyche Delicacies, Coffee, Chocolate, Chiles, Kava and Cannabis, and Why They’re Good For You, explores the medicinal qualities of psychoactive/psychedelic plants.[47]

Recent Work

Since 1997 Kilham has worked extensively in the Amazon rainforest and the Peruvian Andes. He has focused attention on trade of maca (Lepidium meyenii), cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa), dragon's blood (Croton lechleri), and has worked with native shamans investigating the psychedelic healing potion ayahuasca[48] (Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis). Kilham’s work with these plants has been featured on media such as Fox News, The New York Times,[49] NBC Nightly News,[50] CNN Health,[51] and Psychology Today.

In 2008 and 2009, Kilham made several expeditions to northern Asia, investigating adaptogenic plants that help to reduce stress in body and mind. In particular, Kilham is associated with Rhodiola rosea.[52]

Kilham also partners with EuroPharma, a Wisconsin-based natural supplements company founded by Terry Lemerond, to promote their botanical medicines and develop new products resulting from Kilham’s Medicine Hunter field research.[53] Kilham has promoted the health benefits of curcumin from turmeric, a lead EuroPharma product. Terry Lemerond’s former company, Enzymatic Therapy, still sells Kilham’s award-winning ‘Hot Plants™ for Her’ and ‘Hot Plants™ for Him’ formulas.[54]

Kilham regularly promotes the health benefits of cocoa, and has traveled to numerous cocoa-growing locations, including Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. Kilham has visited the Kuna Indians of Panama, who drink more cocoa per day than any population, and have unusually low rates of cardiovascular disease in the world. Kilham appeared on Good Morning America to explain how antioxidant and brain-active agents in cocoa are linked with less cardiovascular disease and increased levels of serotonin.[55] Kilham works with CocoaWell™, a group of products sourced from a sustainable cocoa cooperative in Ecuador, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Kuna Indians through the Kuna Institute.[56]

Kilham promotes adaptogens, a category of plants that help the body to adapt to stress, appearing with Dr. Manny on Fox News to discuss the topic in March, 2011,[52] and on the Dr. Oz Show in 2008.[57]

Kilham has taught ethnobotany at University of Massachusetts since 2000. His title there is “Explorer in Residence.”[58] He leads the Shaman’s Pharmacy Amazon Field Immersion Course, an expedition to primary rainforest in Peru for students from ‘the five college region’: UMass, Amherst University, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire, and Smith College. Students experience the Amazon while learning about field expedition, sustainability, shamanism, and medicinal plants of the region. Helene travels with Kilham and educates on gender equity and the state of wilderness and wildlife.[59]

Yoga and Meditation

Kilham began practicing yoga and meditation in 1970 and is a teacher and conference keynote speaker.[60][61] His most notable contribution to yoga is the bestselling book, The Five Tibetans: Five Dynamic Exercises for Health, Energy, and Personal Power,[62] called a “simple yet profound practice” by yogi Nicki Doane.[63] Kilham’s book has been a bestseller for 20 years and translated into 22 languages.[64] Deepak Chopra calls this book “a time honored classic”[65] and Dr. Mehmet Oz calls it “a worthy contribution to body-mind wellness and longevity.”[65] In addition to The Five Tibetans, Kilham has written articles on yoga for publications such as Yoga Journal.[66]

Since 1971 Chris has taught yoga to people in classes at conferences, colleges, universities, dance centers, conferences, hospitals and jails. In his yoga presentations, Chris integrates information and methods of yoga, meditation, and the martial arts, to enhance mind/body integration and sexual health, and to promote vitality, longevity, and healthy aging.

Kilham has a Mind Body Disciplines degree from University of Massachusetts-Amherst, a major that he designed himself.[67]

Kilham is the author of fourteen books and numerous publications on medicinal plants, natural products, and yoga, including The Five Tibetans: Five Dynamic Exercises for Health, Energy, and Personal Power and Stalking the Wild Orgasm,[68] which appears as a key character set-up prop in the 1988 movie, Earth Girls are Easy in the lead role Valerie Gail’s (played by Geena Davis) lingerie drawer.[69]

Family Background

Chris Kilham was born and raised in a family of ministers, broadcast and public speaking professionals. He is the son of Elizabeth Scalise Kilham “Bette Day” (1925-2006) and Gene Kilham (1919-1971). Bette Day was one of the first female on-screen TV talents at Boston’s WBZ-TV and became a popular radio disc jockey during her 43 year broadcasting career.[82] Gene Kilham was also a broadcasting professional and songwriter. His grandfather, Rev. Dr. Victor Scalise graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1932 and spoke for his graduating class and received an award for effective preaching.[83] Kilham’s uncle and first cousin are both Baptist ministers.[84]

Chris Kilham did his first commercial gig for Welch's Grape Juice on live TV at the age of 7 and did several commercials as a child.[85]
