It was affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland[1]. It closed down permanently in 2000.
History
The location first opened in 1833 as Washington Medical College[2]. It was later called the Church Home and Infirmary[3]. Washington Medical College was the medical school connected with Washington College of Pennsylvania (now part of Washington & Jefferson College).
Edgar Allan Poe was taken to this location when he was found semiconscious; this is where he subsequently died in 1849[4][5][6].
During the 1940s, Church Home and Hospital was one of three Baltimore hospitals providing a sparse number of beds for colored patients[7].
In 1978, a plan to expand the hospital was opposed[8].
Current usage of grounds
A new townhouse development known as Broadway Overlook has been built on the old grounds of the hospital[9].
