Biography

Born in Glanmire, County Cork, McCarthy was born into a family that was steeped in Gaelic games. His father, Teddy McCarthy, was a renowned dual player with Cork and remains the only player to have won All-Ireland medals in both hurling and football in the same year.[1]

Playing career

Club

McCarthy plays his club hurling with his local club called Sarsfield's and has enjoyed much success. He first came to prominence as a member of the club's minor team in 2007. That year Sarsfield's played Midleton in the final of the county minor championship. A decisive 2-15 to 1-8 score line gave Sras the win and gave McCarthy a county minor winners' medal.[2]

McCarthy subsequently joined the Sarsfield's senior hurling team. It was the beginning of a hugely successful period for the club as, in his debut year in 2008, McCarthy's side qualified for the final of the county senior championship. A narrow 2-14 to 2-13 victory over Bride Rovers gave McCarthy a coveted county senior winners' medal and gave Sars a first county final win since 1957.[3]

In 2009 Sarsfield's had the chance to make history by putting back-to-back county titles together. After reaching the championship decider for the second year in succession, Newtownshandrum provided the oppoistion. A rout took place on that occasion as Newtown won the game by 3-22 to 1-12.[4]

Sarsfield's proved that this defeat was only a temporary set-back as the club reached a third successive county final in 2010. Glen Rovers provided the opposition and a close game developed. McCarthy gave an inspirational performance, scoring eight points and collecting the man of the match award, as Sarsfield's won the game by 1-17 to 0-18.[5] It was also a second county championship title for McCarthy.

Inter-county

McCarthy was called up due to the 2008-2009 Cork Hurlers strike.[6]
