Civilization World is an online multiplayer game (MMOG) developed by acclaimed game developer Sid Meier and Firaxis and launched on July 6th, 2011 on Facebook. The game is currently in Beta phase. The game was originally named Civilization Network, but was officially changed to Civilization World on January 6th, 2011.

According to Sid Meier, Civilization World will offer "everything you enjoy in Civ in a fully persistent environment — you can play as much as you like, whenever you like, and it'll be free to play."^[1]

Between early May and September 2010, the official 2K team offered no updates regarding Civilization World, causing many followers to believe the entire project had been scrapped (or indeed, never existed in the first place). In August, 2K Games' Community Manager "2K Greg" announced that Civilization World was however still very much alive.^[2]

In November, Take-Two's soon-to-be CEO (then the company's Executive Chairman) Strauss Zelnick confirmed once again that Civilization World was still in production, with the planned release date set for sometime in 2011. ^[3]

On July 6, 2011 Civilization World entered open beta and was made available to the public.
