Martín Gastón Demichelis (born December 20, 1980 in Justiniano Posse, Córdoba) is an Argentine footballer who plays as a centre back for Bayern Munich. He was also a defensive midfielder before Ottmar Hitzfeld chose to employ his defensive prowess more as a center back.

Career

Demichelis started playing professionally in 1998 at Buenos Aires based club River Plate, but he didn't manage to find himself a spot in the starting line-up until 2001. He had some good performances at River Plate, which resulted in a transfer to FC Bayern Munich in 2003. His first season with the German team was not very positive, because he suffered a number of minor injuries, but under the command of coach Felix Magath, he has found a place in the teams' starting line-up. Martín has also played a vital role for Bayern in winning their two consecutive "doubles" in 2005, and 2006. On September 11, 2007, he scored his first international goal in a friendly match against Australia, in which his header proved to be the winning scoreline 1-0. He has been a regular in the starting eleven since August and is making a strong claim to Roberto Ayala's famed number 2 shirt.
