History

The club was founded as a cricket club on March 27, 1867 by british railway workers, under the name "Rosario Cricket Club". The institution soon incorporated other sports, such as field hockey, football, athletics and tennis, although Atlético is mostly regarded for its rugby union team[1], which is currently a member of the Unión de Rugby de Buenos Aires

In 1899, the club moved to its current location at Plaza Jewell, named after brothers Charles and Edward Jewell who gifted the land to the club. It is during that period that Rosario Cricket Club changed its name to "Club Atlético del Rosario".

Rugby

In 1886, Club Atlético del Rosario and Buenos Aires FC -known today as Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club- played the first ever club rugby game in Argentina, won by Rosario.

13 years later, in 1899, along with Buenos Aires FC, Lomas and Belgrano; the club would become a founding member of "The River Plate Rugby Union", the origin of today's Argentine Rugby Union[1].

In 1928 Club Atlético del Rosario, then playing in the Unión de Rugby de Buenos Aires championship, became a founding member of the Unión de Rugby de Rosario. As a founding member of the URBA and the URR, the club has the particularity of being a full member of both unions to this day. From 1956, C.A.R. would only take part in URR competitions, before rejoining URBA competitions in 1983. When playing in the URBA, C.A.R. use C.A.S.I.'s home ground in San Isidro, in order to facilitate travel for the visiting teams[1].

The club has won both unions' top competition many times and is considered one of the best rugby teams in the country. As of 2010, around 30 C.A.R. players have been capped for Argentina.
