Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepción Futbol, is a Chilean football club based in the city of Concepción. The club was founded August 8, 1994 and plays in the top level of the Chilean football league. Their home games are played at the Estadio Municipal de Concepción.

History

While it is antecedent to the "Club Deportivo Universitario", amateur team that played the Regional Championship in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, along with sports teams like Naval de Talcahuano, Lord Cochrane and Fernandez Vial becoming Champion in 1962, the current Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepción was founded recently in 1994.

Tercera División: 1994–1997

The football branch of the Universidad de Concepción being his formal participation in the Tercera División, organized by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Amateur (ANFA), playing his first match against Deportes Talcahuano at Estadio El Morro on 10 April 1994. The club had as coach to the former footballer of Universitario, Luis Vera Avendaño for this season. The club ended in the fourth position of the South-central zone with 22 points in his first season in Tercera División, nearly promoted to the Primera B.

In the next season, Universidad de Concepción failed to replicate the results of the last season, finishing in the seventh place of the South zone, going to the Relegation Playoffs. However, the club won this playoffs.

During the 1996 season, with the former footballer Mario Obsén as the coach, the club was runner-up of Tercera División, after of finishing second after of Santiago Morning in the quadrangular playoffs to Primera B by 4 points of the Primera B. However, Universidad de Concepción had a record of sixteen victories and six defeats in 34 games.

In 1997, Universidad de Concepción won the Tercera División, and the club was promoted to Primera B, being the Primera B the first professional tournament of the club and the first title of the club. The promotion was achieved after of the victory for 2–1 against Unión La Calera on 8 December 1997.

Professional Era

In the first season of Universidad de Concepción in the professional football, the club realized a good campaign in Primera B 1998, also the team nearly qualified to the Promotion playoffs to Primera División.

In the next season of 1999, the club had an irregular season ending ninth in table, this generated important changes in the club administration, dismissing to the coach of this moment, and hiring to the coach Luis Marcoleta. However in 2002, the club was promoted to the Primera División.

In the first season of Universidad de Concepción in 2003, under the coach Fernando Díaz, the club made an unexpected campaign, qualifying to the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana of 2004.

In the Copa Libertadores, the club qualifying to the Group 3 with Cruzeiro, Santos Laguna and Caracas FC. However, the club ended in the last position with 2 points under Caracas with 6 points. In the Copa Sudamericana, the club qualified to the Chile/Bolivia preliminary, after of the victory against Santiago Wanderers, for a 3–1 aggregate. However, against Bolívar in La Paz, the team was defeated 4–2 and was eliminated. But against Bolívar, the second goal of the club, was scored by the goalkeeper Nicolás Peric, in a goal from his own porter. The club also recognized as the best club of the Chilean football by the IFFHS in 2004.

During the Torneo de Apertura 2006, Universidad de Concepción qualified to the semifinals of the playoffs against Colo-Colo, but the team was defeated 4–3 in the first leg and 2–0 in the second leg. The team however ended in the 5th position of the Annual Table of 2006. In the next season, under the coach Marcelo Barticciotto, the team was runner-up of the Torneo de Clausura 2007, being defeated newly by Colo-Colo.

In the 2008 season, Barticciotto was dismissed, and replaced by Jorge Pellicer, because of the irregular campaign during the season. In the Torneo de Apertura, the club ended in the 16th position with 21 points. In the second semester tournament, the Torneo de Clausura, the club once ended in the 16th position, going to the Promotion playoffs to Primera B (Second Division) against Coquimbo Unido. However, the club won this match in a 5–1 aggregate.

Meanwhile in the Copa Chile 2008–09, the club was proclaimed champion of the tournament, after of a victory in the finals against the Tercera División club Deportes Ovalle for 2–1 at Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium, being this the first professional title of the club.

After of an irregular season in the Torneo de Apertura 2009, in the Torneo de Clausura the club made a good campaign during the tournament, ended in the 5th position qualifying to the playoffs. However, once again the club was eliminated by Colo-Colo, now in the quarterfinals.

In the Primera División Chilena 2010, Universidad de Concepción made an irregular season, ended in the 15th position with 38 points over Santiago Morning with 36 points. However, the club once went to the Promotion playoffs, now against Curicó Unido, and the team nearly relegated to Primera B, but the team won the match 3–2.
