The Coast Guard Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports projects that enhance the education, welfare and morale of members of the United States Coast Guard. Founded in 1969 to provide funds for academic, athletic, and morale needs of the United States Coast Guard Academy and its cadets, the Foundation expanded its charter to support projects that enhance the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees from all parts of the country, who in turn elect a Board of Directors to oversee the management of the Foundation. The Foundation's headquarters are located in Stonington, Connecticut.[1]

Activities

The Foundation supports the U.S. Coast Guard by providing morale support for Guardians, funding various scholarships, hosting annual dinners in several Coast Guard districts, and supporting the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Support for the Academy since 1970 has included funding projects like the waterfront and athletic programs, and academic enrichment programs that provide cadets with equipment that puts them on par with an elite group of other universities. The Foundation provided support to complete the new track and field complex and an in-kind gift substantially overhauled a computer lab in the engineering department.

The Foundation also manages a boat donation program providing sailboats for cadet use in the Academy's offshore sailing program. In partnership with the Coast Guard Academy's Alumni Association, the Foundation is undertaking a capital project to provide the Academy with a new fleet of sail training vessels. Called the Leadership 44 project, the program will acquire a series of 44-foot sailboats for use in training second class cadets in sailing, seamanship, navigation and leadership.[2]
