Colin Morley, FRCP, FRCPCH, FRACP, is a British/Australian academic Neonatologist. He was the Professor Director of Neonatal Medicine at The Royal Women’s Hospital and The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne and The University of Melbourne, Australia, from May 1998 to September 2008.

Important contributions to scientific knowledge

  • The development, synthesis and testing of efficacy of an artificial surfactant for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in premature babies
  • Studies of the biochemistry and physical properties of pulmonary surfactant related to cot death, pneumonia and septicaemia
  • Investigating many aspects of neonatal ventilation
  • Determining the importance of individual, and combinations of symptoms and signs of illness in 1007 infants less than 6 months of age and using this to develop the BabyCheck [1] scoring system to help parents and professional assess the severity of an infant’s illness. This has been widely promoted and used in the UK.
  • Investigation of the risk factors for cot death
  • Studies of use of Nasal CPAP
  • Studies of use of Neonatal Volume ventilation
  • Studies of use of High frequency ventilation
  • Studies of use of Endotracheal suction
  • Studies of use of Neonatal nasal ventilation
  • Studies of use of Neonatal resuscitation
  • Studies of how preterm infants breathe at birth
