Conciliabulum of Pisa

Conciliabulum of Pisa

Conciliabulum of Pisa was an irregular Catholic ecumenical council held in 1511–2 and not recognized by the pope.

When elected pope (1503), Julius II (1443–1513) promised under oath that he would soon convoke a general council. However, as time passed the promise was not fulfilled. On 28 May 1511 rebel cardinals summoned a General Council to meet at Pisa on 1 September 1511, sent this letter to all the leading princes of Europe, and convoked also the pope.

The actual proceedings became on 1 November 1511. The four cardinals who met at Pisa came with proxies from three others. Only 16 bishops were present. Since Pisans were strongly against this council, it was moved to Milan where held its sessions from December 1511 to June 1512 when the Pope Julius II was suspended. Then it was moved to Asti and finally to Lyons.
