A Contemporary Religious Order is a form of Religious Order with modern interpretations of structure, governance, and routine. While most contemporary religious orders possess elements found in traditional orders there are notable differences, including those which are non-monastic and others that are independent from the jurisdiction of church authority (i.e., self-governing).
Various orders of chivalry once under the patronage of noble families have now become contemporary religious orders emphasizing moral and spiritual virtues. Contemporary religious orders, while frequently under the pastoral care of a senior church officer (typically a Prelate), may also be governed by lay or non-Ordained members. A feature of some contemporary religious orders is the recovered use of the historic title Provost as a designation for the spiritual leader of the order.
