Ballela

Ballela ("Baile Aileach" in Irish) is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland. Ballela is part of the Catholic parish of Dromore. It is located approximately five miles (8 km) from Banbridge, perched on top of one of the many small hills (drumlins) that are common in Down. A number of prehistoric ráths surround the village. Well known for its hurling and camogie club, Ballela has a long sporting tradition.

Sport

The Ballela area has a long connection with Gaelic games and hurling was first played in Ballela as far back as 1901. The first County Down Senior Hurling Championship win came in the 1936 final played in Castlewellan against Kilclief. Further titles were won in 1937, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1951 and 1952.

Recently the hurling club won the Junior Championship in 2008.

New playing fields, meeting rooms and changing facilities have been developed during 2005 and was officially opened in 2007.

The local primary scholl, All Saint's, closed in June 2006 due to the small number of pupils attending.
