Corporate History

CounterPath Corporation was initially founded as Xten in 2002 and launched their first commercial product, the X-PRO SIP softphone in 2003.

In 2005, Xten changed their name to CounterPath Solutions.[3]

In 2007, CounterPath Solutions revised their name to CounterPath Corporation after acquiring NewHeights Software Corporation .[4] CounterPath further acquired BridgePort Networks[5] and FirstHand Technologies[6] in 2008.

In 2009, CounterPath’s X-Lite softphone reached 340,000 downloads per month.[7] CounterPath also had a patent granted for their Network Convergence Gateway solution [8] which allows for handoff between cellular and internet protocol telephony, giving users the ability to roam between mobile and IP networks seamlessly and handoff active calls faster.

In 2010, CounterPath had an additional patent granted for Fixed Mobile Convergence ,[9] which allows the use of a mobile number across both mobile and fixed networks to enable converged mobile and desktop communications. CounterPath also launched their Bria 3 softphone for Mac, Windows and Linux,[10] as well as a Bria mobile application for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch[11] and Android.[12]

In 2011, CounterPath launched their Network Convergence Gateway (NCG) Exchange[13], a hosted service that enables wireline operators to deliver Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) services, including voice, Instant Messaging (IM), Voice Call Continuity (VCC) and SMS, over-the-top of mobile networks. The company also launched Bria iPad Edition[14], a softphone application for the Apple iPad and added Instant Message and presence functionality to their Bria iPhone Edition mobile softphone though an in-app Premium Feature add-on.
