List of countries by area

List of countries by area

This is a list of the world's sovereign states and their dependent territories by area, ranked by total area.

Entries in this list are based on those in the ISO standard ISO 3166-1. Territories that are not integral, such as dependent territories, are listed separately (in italics) or noted as included. Not included in the list are uninhabited dependent territories, such as various countries' claims to parts of the continent of Antarctica[Note 1] – and entities such as the European Union[Note 2] (4,324,782 km2/1,669,808 sq mi total area) that have some degree of sovereignty but do not consider themselves to be sovereign countries or dependent territories. States with limited recognition that are not listed in the ISO standard ISO 3166-1 are not included, but are noted within the countries they are recognised as part of with areas given.

This list includes three measurements of area:

  • Total area: is the sum of all land and water areas delimited by international boundaries and/or coastlines.
  • Land area: is the aggregate of all surfaces delimited by international boundaries and/or coastlines, excluding inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers).
  • Water area: is the sum of the surfaces of all inland water bodies, such as lakes, reservoirs, or rivers, as delimited by international boundaries and/or coastlines.[1] Some entries may also include marine internal waters (coastal waters). Territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zones are not included.

Data are taken from the CIA World Factbook[2] unless otherwise noted.

Notes

  1. ^ The following countries have territorial claims in Antarctica: Argentina (969,000 km2/374,000 sq mi), Australia (5,896,500 km2/2,276,700 sq mi), Chile (1,250,000 km2/480,000 sq mi), France (432,000 km2/167,000 sq mi), New Zealand (450,000 km2/170,000 sq mi), Norway (2,500,000 km2/970,000 sq mi) and United Kingdom (1,395,000 km2/539,000 sq mi), which to some extent overlap. The area from 90°W to 150°W (2,100,000 km2/810,000 sq mi) is currently unclaimed territory. These areas usually have no human inhabitants, excluding scientists.
  2. ^ The European Union is a sui generis supranational union. It covers a total area of 4,324,782 km2 (1,669,808 sq mi) and would be ranked 7th if it were included (3.0% of world's total land area).
  3. ^ a b There are two reasons for the dispute in rankings between the United States and China. The first reason is China's inclusion of several disputed territories. If the territories of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract, which are controlled by China, were added to the current UN figure for China, China's total area would be 9,640,011 km2 (3,722,029 sq mi). Using this figure, the area of China would exceed the area of the United States. The second reason relates to how "total area" is calculated. The figure given for the United States additionally includes coastal waters, while the figure for China does not. The inclusion of coastal waters is the calculation method used by the CIA World Factbook, whereas the latter is the method employed by Encyclopædia Britannica, reaching differing conclusions.
  4. ^ The United Nations figure of 9,629,091 km2 (3,717,813 sq mi) excludes territorial waters.[3] The total area of the United States is listed as 9,522,055 km2 (3,676,486 sq mi) by the Encyclopædia Britannica, which is slightly less than that of China.[4]
  5. ^ The area given is the United Nations official figure for Mainland China, excluding the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau;[5] Taiwan and other islands of the Republic of China;[5] territories in dispute with India (Aksai Chin, Trans-Karakoram Tract, South Tibet); coastal and territorial waters. Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract are claimed by India, controlled by China, whereas South Tibet is claimed by China, controlled by India. The total area of China is listed as 9,572,900 km2 (3,696,100 sq mi) by the Encyclopædia Britannica, which is slightly larger than that of the United States[6] See territorial changes and land reclamations of P.R. China
  6. ^ According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the UN figure of 7,692,024 km2 (2,969,907 sq mi) includes the statistical entity known as "Other territories", which is defined in the Census Dictionary as consisting of the Jervis Bay Territory, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Christmas Island.
  7. ^ Includes the territories of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island.[Note 6] Excludes the external territories of Norfolk Island, Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Coral Sea Islands Territory, and Heard and McDonald Islands. Excludes the claim of the Australian Antarctic Territory.
  8. ^ The area given is the United Nations official figure. If Indian Kashmir (claimed by Pakistan) and South Tibet (claimed by China) are excluded, the area would be 3,201,446 km2 (1,236,085 sq mi).[7]
  9. ^ Does not include claims on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and on Antarctica.
  10. ^ Does not include claims on Clipperton Island (Spanish: Isla de la Pasión) 8.9 square kilometres (3.4 sq mi).
  11. ^ The UN Demographic Yearbook lists a figure of 1,628,750 km2 (628,860 sq mi), which refers to land area only.
  12. ^ Excludes data for territories of Jammu and Kashmir that are disputed with India. This region consists of the territories of Azad Kashmir (13,297 km2/5,134 sq mi) and Gilgit-Baltistan (72,520 km2/28,000 sq mi).[10] Including these territories would produce an area figure of 881,912 km2 (340,508 sq mi).
  13. ^ The French Republic includes French overseas territories and, excluding French Southern and Antarctic Lands.
The UN source reports 551,500 square kilometres / 212,900 square miles as the geographic European area (Metropolitan France), and separately reports the areas of overseas departments of French Guiana (83,534 km2/32,253 sq mi), Guadeloupe (1,705 km2/658 sq mi), Martinique (1,128 km2/436 sq mi), and Réunion (2,513 km2/970 sq mi); Mayotte's area (373 km2 (144 sq mi)) is included with Comoros. The areas of these overseas departments total (89,253 km2/34,461 sq mi), and adding that to the geographic European area brings the total area for the French Republic to (640,753 km2/247,396 sq mi).
Another source, the French National Institute for Statistice and Economic Studies, gives an area figure of (632,759 km2/244,310 sq mi) as the area of Metropolitan France and overseas departments.[12] The CIA gives a water area of Metropolitan France as 1,530 km2 (590 sq mi).
  14. ^ Includes the largely unrecognized Somaliland, which has an area of 137,600 km2 (53,100 sq mi) and is de facto independent from Somalia.
  15. ^ Includes Spanish possessions on or near the coast of Africa (Ceuta, Melilla, Plazas de soberanía).
  16. ^ Does not include the disputed southern Kuril Islands.
  17. ^ Includes Åland Islands (1,552 km2/599 sq mi).
  18. ^ The UN data includes mainland Norway only, and excludes the integral overseas areas of Svalbard and Jan Mayen, the dependency of Bouvet Island, and the Antarctic dependency claims of Queen Maud Land and Peter I Island (243 km2/94 sq mi).
  19. ^ The figure given on a Philippine Government website is 299,764 km2 (115,740 sq mi).[14]
  20. ^ Excludes Niue, the Cook Islands and Tokelau, as well as the Antarctic claim of Ross Dependency.
  21. ^ Administration is split between Morocco and the partially recognised, de facto independent Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, both of which claim the entire territory.
  22. ^ Does not include the three Crown Dependencies (768 km2/297 sq mi) and the 14 British overseas territories (1,742,857 km2/672,921 sq mi).
  23. ^ The UN area figure includes the largely unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which has an area of 11,458 km2 (4,424 sq mi) and is de facto independent from Azerbaijan.
  24. ^ The UN figure of 88,361 km2 (34,116 sq mi) includes Kosovo, which has declared independence.
  25. ^ The UN area figure includes the largely unrecognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia, both of which are de facto independent from Georgia. The area of Abkhazia is 8,660 km2 (3,340 sq mi)[18] and that of South Ossetia is 3,900 km2 (1,500 sq mi).[19]
  26. ^ Also known as the Chagos Islands. Home of the Diego Garcia military base; no permanent resident population. The UN gives no information for British Indian Ocean Territory.
  27. ^ The UN figure includes only the constituent country Denmark; the entire Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland and Faroe Islands covers 2,220,093 km2 (857,183 sq mi) and would be 13th.
  28. ^ The UN figure of 37,354 km2 (14,422 sq mi) includes only the European territory of the Netherlands; adding Aruba (180 km2 (69 sq mi)) and the Netherlands Antilles (800 km2 (310 sq mi)), the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands covers 38,334 km2 (14,801 sq mi). The official figure for the whole Kingdom is 41,528 km2 (16,034 sq mi).[20]
  29. ^ Excludes state forests and communanzas amounting to (7.15 km2 (2.76 sq mi)).
  30. ^ Bhutan's entry in the CIA Factbook as of July 2009 lists the same number reported by the Bhutan government in 2002.[21] The previous CIA Factbook update listed the area as 47,000 km2 (18,000 sq mi),[22] close to the 46,500 km2 (18,000 sq mi) figure reported by the Bhutan government in 1997.[23]
  31. ^ The UN source does not include data for the Republic of China (Taiwan). The 2009 Statistical Yearbook of the Republic of China gives a total area of 36,188 km2 (13,972 sq mi).
