County Route 74 (CR 74) is a 5.3-mile (8.5 km) long west–east county route in the central part of Rockland County, New York. CR 74 begins at US 202 in Montebello, near Harriman State Park, and ends at CR 35A in New City. CR 74 is an alternate route to County Route 80, as it runs parallel with it for its entire run. CR 74 runs through Montebello, Viola, Monsey, Spring Valley, before ending just inside the New City town limits.

CR 74 is a key route in Rockland as it has intersections with a few north–south state highways in the county. CR 74 passes several schools along its route, including Rockland Community College, Suffern High School, Ramapo High School, and a few elementary schools. The highway was also a reference to the naming of the community of Viola. After some designation changes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, CR 74 was designated over County Route 106 and County Route 107.

Route description

Rockland County Route 74 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 202, along the borderline of Harriman State Park in Montebello. The highway progresses eastward from the T-intersection, crossing over the Mahwah River after the US 202 intersection. Along the first stretch of CR 74, Viola Road, the route passes very large houses and condominiums. At the northern terminus of Vivian Place, a dead-end highway, a pond is noticeable near the county route. At the intersection with Appian Road, County Route 74 bends to the east, away from its northeastern progression. After a housing complex, the route turns to the southeast, and enters downtown Montebello.[1]

CR 74 begins here at U.S. 202, and proceeds west into Montebello

In Montebello, County Route 74 passes Suffern High School, and after that, there is another curve, this time to the northeast. Continuing through the community of houses, County Route 74 then enters a short patch of trees. At an intersection with County Route 85 (Spook Rock Road), Viola Road turns southward along a concurrency, forking soon after. Viola Road continues eastward, passing through the community of Viola. There it passes dozens of homes, and eventually Rockland Community College, where development is built up, and the route is the main road in the area. To the east of Viola, County Route 74 intersects with NY 306.[1]

CR 74 westbound merges with CR 85 just ahead for a tenth of a mile before heading west toward its end at U.S. Route 202

Past the intersection with NY 306, passes Ramapo High School and settles into the developed community. After an intersection with Union Road, County Route 74 turns to the south, and eventually, the southeast at intersection with Zuba Lane. This shifts into an eastward progression, passing through another developed community of homes and businesses, this time in Monsey. In Monsey, County Route 74 is now West Eckerson Road, passing through commercial and residential areas. Outside of a large strip mall, County Route 74 intersects with NY 45, at an intersection known as "The Hill". After the intersection with NY 45, the route changes from West to East Eckerson Road.[1]

After a few blocks from Monsey, CR 74 enters the community of Hillcrest. After an intersection with Fayve Road, County Route 74 terminates at an intersection with County Route 35A (West Clarkstown Road) in New City.[1]

History

The name Viola Road was the predecessor to the community of Viola, New York in Rockland County. Back during the 1880s, the community of Mechanicsville, named after the local industries in the area, wanted a community post office. The problem they experienced is that the community of Mechanicville, New York, was already given one in Saratoga County, upstate. To resolve this issue, the community renamed themselves as Viola in 1882, after a local girl born around that time. The post office in Viola closed in 1905; however, the community kept their name.[2]

Prior to about 1991, County Route 74 was numbered differently under a different system of highways in Rockland County. The stretch of Viola Road was designated as County Route 106 and Eckerson Road was designated as County Route 107.[3] By 1991, the highways were renumbered, and County Routes 106 and 107 became County Route 74.[4]
