Coxiella refers to a genus of Gram-negative bacteria in the family Coxiellaceae. It is named after Harold Herald Rea Cox (1907–1986), an American bacteriologist. Coxiella burnetii is the only member of this genus. It is one of the Gammaproteobacteria.[1]

It is an intracellular bacteria and it survives within the Phagolysosome.
