Demographics

Crawford is a diverse but well-integrated community. Hindus, Christians and Muslims are equally represented in the suburb, which contains two big churches, one mosque, and a few Hindu temples (Lord Vinayaga temple, Goddess Amman temples). The Roman Catholic church is called St. Theresa Church.

In early 1920s Thiru. S.Arokiyasamy Pillai bought acres of land from krappatti village community and established a colony for Roman Catholics formed as Crawford Colony. Early in those days Crawford was not developed, areas adjacent to Colony Main Road started developing with people building houses in a very orderly fashion. A colony with a wide road, equally spaced plots for Individual Villas with front yard space for garden and enough curtilage around. The land to the south of colony main road (present day TSA Nagar, anbu nagar) was farm land. In early 1930s it was his initiative to construct a church for colony settlers since there were no churches in the neighborhood and the church was completed in 1934 with some contribution from colonists and a part from himself. A stone inscription with his name can be witnessed even today in St. Theresa Church. Later a convent school for boys and girls was started very close to the church very well known today as Little flower Girls Hr Sec school located in convent street, managed by Sisters of St Annes, Trichy. An industry was brought up to the west of Colony across the Madurai Main Road. In later years the area to the south was developed. A vibrant community with closely knit family neighborhood - home gardens, cricket grounds, a rain-fed lake and even a defence shooting range.
