In 2008 there were 452,941 crimes reported in Virginia, including 21,811 violent crimes and 369 murders and homicides.[1]
Crime in Richmond
Crime in Richmond, Virginia has been a major problem but is progressively getting better. For instance, in 2004 Richmond had 93 murders giving the city a murder rate of 47.3 per 100,000 people which is comparable to much larger cities per capita, such as Detroit or Baltimore. As of 2007, Richmond experienced 51 murders which gave it murder rate of 27 per 100,000. Although overall crime is dropping in Richmond, in 2007 The Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reports ranked Richmond as the 5th worst city for violent crimes with populations of 100,000 to 250,000. Capital punishment laws
Capital punishment is legal in this state. Both an electric chair and a lethal injection are used to execute prisoners.[2]
