Marguerite (free shuttle)

Marguerite (free shuttle)

Marguerite is a free shuttle service Stanford University offers to its students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Named after one of the Stanford family's horses, Marguerite operates a few dozen bus shuttles throughout the university and the nearby town of Palo Alto, California.

The bus shuttle service was introduced in 1973, when it replaced an earlier light rail service and an even earlier horse and buggy service. Currently, nine lines run through the campus and provide free transportation to the two Palo Alto Caltrain train stations, Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC), Stanford Shopping Center, and the San Antonio Shopping Center.

According to the Marguerite webpages, the shuttle service serves 135 stops on or around the campus; in 2004-2005, it carried some 1.2 million riders; and it runs approximately 64,000 hours a year [http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/AboutMarguerite.shtml] .
