Deva Manoharan Swaminathan, MP (born 30 April 1945) (known as D.M. Swaminathan) is a Sri Lankan Lawyer and Politician. Current Member of Parliament,[1] he was the former Governor of the Western Province and Chairman of the National Savings Bank.

Family and Education

Swaminathan hails from a very prominent political family which is devoutly Hindu. Sir Sangarapillai Pararajasingham, member of the Senate of Ceylon, was his grandfather, whilst Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam was his Great Grandfather, whose son was Sir Arunachalam Mahadeva was a Member of the State Council. Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan and Ponnambalam Coomaraswamy were also members of the Legislative Council who were the brothers of Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam.

Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam’s grandfather was Arumugampillai Coomaraswamy Mudaliyar, Member of the First Legislative Council in the year 1833. Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam’s maternal uncle was Sir Muthu Coomaraswamy also a Member of the Legislative Council. His son was Ananda Coomaraswamy, philosopher, metaphysician and historian.

D. M. Swaminathan is married to Gayathri Kathikeshan and has two children Shobana & Prakash. Educated at the prestigious Royal College Colombo, Swaminathan studied law at the Sri Lanka Law College and was admitted to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka as an Attorney at Law.

Political career

He was appointed as a Member of the University Grants Commission, Public Service Commission, Educational & Service Committee by President J.R. Jayawardena and later was appointed member of the Local Government Service Commission by President R. Premadasa. Currently he is a member of the Parliamentary Council.

Swaminathan is the Chief Trustee of the Sri Ponnambalavaneswarar Devasthanam in Colombo and was elected as Centenary President of the Vivehanda Society, Colombo. He is also Trustee of the All Ceylon Hindu Congress and was the Past Governor of Rotary International Sri Lanka and part of District in South India. Member of the Board of Trustees of Ramanathan College and Parameshwara College Trusts, Jaffna.
