The Dailyer Nebraskan

The Dailyer Nebraskan

The Dailyer Nebraskan (often referred to as the DerN), established in 2008, is a satirical newspaper produced biweekly during the fall and spring semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.[1] Although the Dailyer Nebraskan has a similar name and is also University-funded, it is in no way affiliated with UNL's official newspaper, the Daily Nebraskan. The current Editor-in-Chief is Jacob Zlomke.

History

The paper was started by Carson Vaughan, who also served as its first Editor-in-Chief.[2] The paper's fight and eventual victory in becoming a UNL-sanctioned newspaper created much fanfare within the Lincoln community.[3]

In 2009, the paper went into a brief hiatus because of funding, but hosted a concert in Omaha, Nebraska to help pay for publishing costs.[4]

Content

The paper contains fake news stories ranging from local and campus issues, to national and international issues. The DerN contains political, economic, social and sports stories. It also contains a serious entertainment section much like The Onion.[5] The editors of The Dailyer Nebraskan keep in contact with The Onion editors, using them to aid in finding sources for stories.[2] Vaughan began contact with the staff of The Onion after a summer internship with them.[6]

Controversy

As a satirical newspaper the paper has received numerous complaints. One such complaint came in an early article that contained Mohammad and Jesus fighting for scripture sales. The Muslim student organization of UNL was not happy about the article and complained.[7]
