David B. Sarwer, Ph.D. (born January 4, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois) is a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry and Surgery at University of Pennsylvania.[1]

His clinical roles include serving as Director of Clinical Services at the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders, and Director of the Stunkard Weight Management Program at University of Pennsylvania.[1]

Dr. Sarwer's research roles include serving as an Investigator on research conducted at the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders, the Center for Human Appearance,[2] and at the Stokes Research Institute at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.[3]

Educational background

Dr. Sarwer received his B.A. in 1990 from Tulane University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in Psychology. He also received the Aaron Hartman Medal in Psychology and the Senior Scholar Award in Psychology.[1]

Dr. Sarwer received his M.A. in 1992 and his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1995 from Loyola University of Chicago. He then completed his internship year at the Medical College of Pennsylvania at Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1]

Career

Dr. Sarwer began as an Instructor at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1995 in the Departments of Psychiatry and Surgery. He was promoted to Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry and Surgery in 1997, and Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry and Surgery in 2004.

Clinical practice

Clinically, Dr. Sarwer is the Director of the Stunkard Weight Management Program at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.[4]

In 2007, the Stunkard Weight Management Program opened with a mission of translating the new research findings from the Center for Weight at Eating Disorders into practice for people looking to lose weight and prevent or control obesity.[4]

Dr. Sarwer is also actively involved in the Bariatric Surgery Program at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.[5]

There, he conducts behavioral and psychological evaluations of patients prior to surgery. He also treats individuals with eating or other psychological concerns after bariatric surgery, and provides psychotherapeutic treatment to patients who have body dysmorphic disorder or other appearance concerns.[1]

Research interests

Dr. Sarwer's research focuses on the assessment and treatment of obesity. He is Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on three NIH funded grants investigating the psychological aspects of bariatric surgery. He is also involved in two studies investigating the treatment of obesity in primary care settings.

Dr. Sarwer is also a consultant to the Center for Human Appearance at University of Pennsylvania, where he conducts research on the psychological aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. He also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Member to the Stokes Research Institute at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
