Debt. The first 5000 Years is a book of anthropologist David Graeber. It has been published in 2011. Graeber analyzes the function of debt in human history. He argues that debts often has driven revolutions and social and political changes. The book has been connected to movements like Occupy Wall Street.[1][2][3]

Graeber critisizes in Debt different economic concepts, especially:[2]

  • the historical myth of barter
  • the concept of money as an independent object of worth, rather than a relation.
