Dementieva–S. Williams rivalry

Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva are two tennis players who formed a spirited rivalry on the WTA Tour. The two have played numerous matches that have been described as instant classics. Williams is a 13 time Grand Slam champion, while Dementieva was the 2008 Olympic Champion. The rivalry ended when Dementieva announced her retirement on October 29, 2010.

Dementieva from Russia and Williams from U.S.A. are tennis players who met 12 times during their careers. Their rivalry was considered one of the best on the WTA Tour.[1] At one stage of their rivalry during 2006 through to 2009, Dementieva won 5 consecutive matches against Williams, including exhibitions.[2]

Their most famous match is widely considered to be their semifinal clash at Wimbledon, where Williams saved a match point during the final set to advance to the final.[3] At the end of the rivalry, Williams won their overall head-to-head series, 7–5.[4]
