"Denial" is a electropop song recorded by English girl group the Sugababes. Written by Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah, VV Brown, Elliot Malloy and Flex Turner for the band's fifth studio album Change (2007), it was released as the album's third and final single, in the first quarter of 2008 (see 2008 in music).

Release and promotion

The Sun confirmed on 5 December 2007 that "Denial" was the next single to be released from the album, following promotional single "My Love Is Pink" which was sent to radio stations and added to music download sites such as 7digital and iTunes few weeks before.^[1] In Germany, "Denial" has been used as the official theme song used for the Sugababes Starcollection at Deichmann, that is selling shoes created and presented by band members.^[2]

On the 8 March, the Sugababes gave a live performance of the song on ITV's Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, and on 19 March they performed the single on GMTV. The b-side to "Denial", a cover of the Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah", was recorded during their appearance on the Radio One Live Lounge.

The music video for "Denial" was directed by Harvey B-Brown, known for working with Scissor Sisters and George Michael. Golden Square's smoke artist Aman worked closely with Brown to devise treatments of the stills. Dramatic colour correction, sometimes just to small parts of each frame to highlight one element, was used along with vignettes and grain to create visuals synonymous with Vogue.^[3] The concept of the video is the Sugababes in a photo shoot, with the girls in a dramatic range of costumes, different guises and is an over-the-top fabulous fashion extravaganza. The short film was shot on a variety of formats, including 16 mm film, bolex, super 8 and 3 stills cameras.^[3]

"I shot the video like fashion editorial, using every inch of the studio, including the fire escape, the gantry and the loading bay," Brown told about the shooting."I even did a couple of shots with the girls in the storage cupboard where the studio lighting stands were kept. And whilst I was shooting one outfit on one girl, I would be getting the next outfit and set ready."^[4]

The video was premiered exclusively on the band's official website on 7 January 2008. On television, the clip premiered on Channel 4's Freshly Squeezed on 9 February 2008.

Chart performance

First released in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2008, "Denial" enjoyed moderate success domestically, making its debut on the UK Singles Chart at number sixty-four on due to increasing downloads from the band's studio album Change. A week later, "Denial" climbed thirty places to number thirty-four. Upon its physical release on 17 March, however the song managed a peak of number 15 on the UK chart, making it the second single in a row from Change to miss the top 10. It eventually spent ten weeks on the chart.^[5] It has sold 86,584 copies in the UK so far.

On the Irish Singles Chart, the single debuted at number fifty based on digital sales alone, one week prior to the song's physical release. The following two weeks, it climbed from number twenty nine to number eighteen, following the physical single release on 20 March 2008.^[5]

Although the single failed to peak within the top 10 in the UK or Ireland, "Denial" has had more success within Continental Europe, where it became a top 10 hit in several countries: The track topped the Estonian Singles Chart.^[5] In Austria, the single peaking at number 4 on the Austrian Singles Chart, making it the Sugababes' third highest-charting song on that particular chart, along with "About You Now" (2007).^[6] In Switzerland, the song debuted and peaked at number 14, while in Germany, "Denial" reached number 11 on the German Singles Chart following the physical release, making it the band's highest-charting non-leading single.^[5]

Also, "Denial" topped the Czech IFPI Airplay Chart, and reached number fifty-five on the Romanian Singles Chart, where it was released as the second single from the album, but soon dropped out of the top 100, after being out-performed by follow-up "Change" (2007).
