Singapore Symphony Orchestra

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), formed in 1979, is a professional orchestra with 96 musicians. Its current Music Director is Lan Shui. The performing choir of the SSO is the Singapore Symphony Chorus directed by the SSO's Resident Conductor Lim Yau. The orchestra's current principal guest conductor is Okko Kamu.

Victoria Concert Hall was the home of the SSO until 2002 when the orchestra moved to the new Esplanade Concert Hall. The SSO performs over 50 symphonic concerts a year. The orchestra has performed in tours in China, Malaysia, Japan, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Greece and Turkey. It has its first tour in the United States in 2005.

The SSO collaborated with the Houston Ballet in 1986, the London City Ballet in 1992, and the Singapore Lyric Opera in the production of Madam Butterfly in 1994.

To make classical music more accessible to the general public, the SSO has also conducted free outdoor concerts. In 2000, SSO performed at the "SSO Goes Pop!" concert with local pop artistes at the Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The SSO has just played under maestro Lorin Maazel in a gala concert during the maestro's Asia tour with violinist Lidia Baich (March 2006).

The orchestra's 06/07 season has just been announced. Season highlights include concerts with baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, percussionist Evelyn Glennie, violinists Cho-Liang Lin, Isabelle van Keulen, Lynnette Seah, Kyoko Takezawa, pianists Jean-Philippe Collard, Vladimir Feltsman, cellist Nina Kotova, conductors Gerard Schwarz and Günther Herbig.
