The Liquidator (song)

"The Liquidator" is a popular early reggae instrumental released in the United Kingdom by the Harry J Allstars in 1969.

In the United Kingdom, the tune is famous for having been played before football matches. It is unknown who introduced the song first with Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion, and Chelsea F.C. all claiming to have used the song first.

The tune is well known amongst supporters of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion. However, West Midlands Police and local safety committees made both Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion remove the track from their playlists, due to obscenities chanted by supporters at their rivals. This removal caused outrage amongst both Wolves and Albion fans and many have called for its return to playlists.

During the 2005-2006 season, West Bromwich Albion briefly re-introduced the track, encouraging fans to clap instead of swearing. The request was ignored and the track once again removed before making another reappearance at the 2006-2007 Championship playoff final. "The Liquidator" still remains a firm favourite with both sets of fans, and is often sold as a mobile phone ringtone targeted at these supporters. The song is often still heard at Stamford Bridge to which the Chelsea fans clap along and shout "Chelsea!". The Liquidators were also one of Chelsea's smaller football firms.

The Staple Singers used the bass line from "The Liquidator" for 1972's "I'll Take You There".
