List of minority cat breeds

List of minority cat breeds

The following is a list of minority cat breeds that do not have the recognition of major national or international cat registries, such as The International Cat Association (TICA) in the U.S., Europe, and Australasia, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) in the U.K., the Fédération Internationale Féline (FiFE) in Europe, or the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) in the U.S., but are recognized by one of the smaller cat registries. Smaller registries include the Rare & Exotic Feline Registry (REFR), The Dwarf Cat Association (TDCA), the New South Wales Cat Fancier Association (NSWCFA) in Australia, and others.

Some minority breeds actively seek major recognition but have yet to receive it; for example, in regions where cat fancying is in its infancy, naturally occurring native varieties can be classified as a minority until they are fully developed into a formal breed. Others are bred for private reasons and inadvertently attract an informal following. Minority breeds may be recognized by "paper registries" or not at all; major recognition can be refused for a variety of reasons (including over-similarity to an existing breed). Some may have Preliminary Status and experimental standards already in place, but turn out to be non-viable.

Discrepancies between breed names can often cause confusion; occasionally the name adopted by one registry is used elsewhere for an entirely different breed; for example the breed known in Australia as "Burmilla Longhair" is analogous to the "Tiffanie" in Britain, but Australia already has a quite different breed known as the "Australian Tiffanie" and both are different from the American "Tiffany" (also known as the Chantilly-Tiffany cat). Such conflicts are decreasing due to better communication between registries, largely facilitated by the World Cat Congress and the internet.

Highlander

What first draws your attention to a Highlander is its incredible head. A Highlander's profile shows a long sloping forehead with the nose, muzzle and chin forming a blunt look. The eyes are set far apart and are a slightly flattened oval in shape, set on a slight bias, and separated by a very wide nose with substantial nose leather. This breed's chin is strong and deep with the muzzle being full and wide. The muzzle length makes the head appear longer than it is wide. The ears are set as much on top as on the sides of the head and stand tall, open, and carry a dominant single and relaxed curl gene. This loose and relaxed curl gene keep the ears standing tall and the base of the ear wide open. In profile a Highlander has minimal curl with only the slightest turn in the backward direction.

What most people like about this breed is the substantial body structure. Watching a Highlander move is pure beauty as their long hind legs flex and the heavy, pronounced muscles ripple between their shoulder blades. A Highlander’s feet are large with prominent knuckles, built for the stamina for which they are known. The Highlander is also known for its naturally short tail that is usually no longer than hock length, although there are some kittens that are born with long tails as well. The Highlander cat has its roots in the Highland Lynx, which is derived from such breeds as the Desert Lynx, the American Curl and the American Bobtail.

A Highlander brings you the "Big Cat look" in a domestic cat. As incredible as their looks are a Highlander is a playful, happy-go-lucky cat that likes nothing better than to have an audience and all eyes on it as it thinks of new zany antics with which to entertain it humans.

The Highlander breed first began development in 2004 with its roots tracing back to the Highland Lynx,. An east coast breeder developed the Highland Lynx in 1993 and although given a name that included “lynx”, these domestic cats were not of any lynx ancestry. These cats immediately attracted interest and a devoted following rapidly developed due to their unique looks, size, and playful, clown like personalities.

In late 2005 we took the name Highlander to further identify our cats as a breed of their own merit. We worked diligently to educate the public; to bring about an awareness of how special these cats are, both in personality and looks; and mostly to earn respectability for this breed and eventual championship status as a member of the cat fancy in one of the largest cat registers in the world, TICA.

This breed originated in the U.S. and is recognize by The International Cat Association (TICA).

Ussuri

The Ussuri is a rare native Russian breed of cat that received early recognition from the emerging cat fancy in Russia. It is believed to be a natural felid hybrid between the small wild cats known as Amur Forest Cats (a subspecies of the Asian Leopard cat) and the pet Siberian and European Shorthair cats of the area. The resulting cat is a muscular, medium-sized cat with a dark striped, spotted or rosetted pattern on a golden-fawn background. This cat has lynx-tufted ears and the tail has a rounded, rather than tapering, tip.

Viverral

The Viverral is a felid hybrid breed of cat. It is of U.S. origin and was developed from the Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) with early generation Bengal cats (which are themselves a hybrid). The resultant cat closely resembles the Fishing Cat.

York Chocolate

The York Chocolate is a relatively new breed of show cat originating in the United States. The breed was developed from non-pedigree domestic cats, and has a long, lean body, semi-long soft, silky fur and is found in only chocolate and lilac varieties (solid or with white). This breed is recognize by The International Cat Association (TICA).
