Malik (Urdu: ملک) is a clan of Hindu Jatt, Muslim Jat and a few Sikh Jat, found primarily in Haryana, India, but also found in other Indian states as well as Pakistan. There are both Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh Jats. They are descended from Mann Jats and have been ferocious warriors in history, earning them the name Malik (leader).^{[citation needed]}

History and origin

Malik (मलिक) or Malak (मलक) or Gathwala is gotra (clan) of Jats/Jatts, The Mahabharata Tribe - Malika (मलिक) The Mahabharata Tribe - Malika (मलिक) may be identified with Jat Gotra - Malik (मलिक) Their original gotra is lalsaroha. Malik is an honour symbol given to their ancestors by the king. In the 12th century they assembled together under the leadership of dada Mitha of the village Bhainswal Kalan, the largest village of Khap, and formed a group called as gathh and named the khap, Gathwala.

Distribution

Malik clans are located in various places in India, including Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab. The largest concentration is within the Sonepat and Jind districts in Haryana. There are over 760 villages of the Malik clan in Haryana, and they are they are the largest clan of Jats within Haryana by population.^{[citation needed]}

There are also several villages of Gathwala Maliks in the Okara District of Pakistan.
