Matthew Kellway is a Canadian politician, who was elected as a New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for Beaches—East York in the 2011 Canadian federal election.[1] He defeated 18-year incumbent Maria Minna by a margin of more than 5,000 votes.[2]

Background

Kellway has a B.A. (Hons.) in political science from Queen's University and a Master of Industrial Relations degree from the University of Toronto. Before his election as the MP for Beaches - East York, Kellway worked as an economist and as a policy analyst with the Society of Energy Professionals.[2][3] He is co-chair of the Toronto Energy Coalition, and former chair of the St. John Catholic School Parent Council.[2]

Matthew Kellway is married to Ontario Crown Prosecutor Donna Kellway.[4] They have three children and live in the Beaches neighbourhood.[5]

Policies

Since his election Matthew Kellway has advocated for improvements to family reuinification in the immigration system and strengthened reports for low-income seniors.[6] As an economist, Kellway has repeatedly challenged the notion that tax cuts create jobs or promote economic growth, pointing to research showing the economic multiplier effect of tax cuts is much less than that of other forms of government spendng.
