It was constructed in two volcanic phases. The first constructed the broad tholeiitic shield volcano of Mauna Loa that ended 1.89 million years ago and the second volcanic phase produced postshield alkalic volcanics 1.76 million years ago.[1] Mauna Loa overlaps the western flank of Wailau, a much larger shield volcano comprising two-thirds of Molokai.
