History

The hotel group was initially created after hotelier Hammy McMillan decided to renovate the North West Castle in his hometown of Stranraer in 1961.[1] It later became the first hotel in the world with an indoor curling ice rink [2][3], and Hammy McMillan's son of the same name would later become a World Champion curler based on his extensive practice there.[4]

Today, the hotel group continues to be owned and run by the McMillan family, who have actively spoken up on local planning issues which affect the tourism industry in the south-west of Scotland.[5] The hotel group is actively involved in local events, particularly those of a sporting nature.[6][7][8]

Portfolio

The group consists of hotels across the south-west of Scotland. Expanding most significantly during the 1990s, the group extended beyond its traditional west-coast heartland with the purchase of two hotels in Peebles in the Scottish Borders at the end of 2004.[9]

More specifically, the hotel group's portfolio includes hotels in Dumfries and Galloway, such as the 18th century home of home of Sir John Ross, North West Castle, now serving as the group's administrative base, as well as the 'Category A' listed building Cally Palace, which was acquired in 1981.[10] The group also has a hotel in nearby Ayrshire, the Scottish Baronial-styled Glenapp Castle.

The two hotels in the Scottish Borders include the Peebles Hydro, designed by renowned Scottish architect James Miller.[11]
