History

Since the beginnings of teaching hospitals and their medical schools in the 18th century, there have always been organisations supporting the needs of their students. As hospitals began to merge with universities at the beginning of the 20th century, their student unions' merged as well. Nowadays most universities with a medical school have a student society as part of the students' union who's remit it is to look after the needs of the medical students.

In May 2011, all the advances and growth of The University of Birmingham's MedSoc was recognised, and hence won the national prize of being the best MedSoc in the whole of the UK (titled MDU Student Medical Society of the year Prize 2011).

Student Life

It is the job of the medsocs to organise the social aspects of student life at medical school. This includes the various student clubs and societies, entertainment and sporting events.

There are various organisations representing the medsocs. MedGroup represents the 5 medsocs of the United Hospitals in London, the BMA Medical Students Committee looks after representational matters, and the National Association of Medics' Sports organises the sporting fixtures between the medical schools.

Additionally, The Scottish and Northern Irish Medics' Sports (SNIMS) competition takes place annually between the medical societies of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, St Andrews and Queen's medical schools; the competition is hosted on a rota-basis between Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. SNIMS 2011 will be held in Edinburgh while SNIMS 2012 will be hosted by Glasgow.

  • Imperial College School of Medicine Students' Union (ICSMSU) is an actual student union and not a Medsoc. Imperial is the only UK university to have its own medical school union. Medical students at Imperial are members of both the Imperial College Union and ICSMSU.
