Geography

Mersin lighthouse is within the Mersin urban fabric and is situated at the west of the mouth of Müftü River at 36°47′06″N 34°37′06″E / 36.785°N 34.61833°E / 36.785; 34.61833[1]. It is surrounded by walking tracks [2] and on the west there is a group of restaurants. The lighthouse is approximatelly 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) west of harbor entrance. Since the dominant wind in Mersin area is lodos (from south west) the lighthouse provides service to the vessels approaching from the west as it is usually the case.

History

The lighthouse was constructed in 1865. It was bought by the republic of Turkey and now it is operated by Directorate General of Coastal Safety (Turkish: Kıyı Emniyeti Genel Müdürlüğü). In 1955 it was reconstructed.

Technical details

The building is an octagonal cylindrical stone tower with lantern and gallery. The tower is also the keeper's house. Its focal plane is 14 metres (46 ft) (including ground altitude). It flashes 3 white flashes in every 10 s. In the past the source of light was kerosine and acetylene. Presently, the light is created by a halogen lamp. The viewing distance is about 15 nautical miles (28 km; 17 mi)[3].
