Michigan–Michigan State ice hockey rivalry is a college ice hockey rivalry between Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey and Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey that is part of the larger intrastate rivalry between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University that exists across a broad spectrum of endeavors including their general athletic programs: Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans. The sports rivalry also includes the Paul Bunyan Trophy and the Michigan–Michigan State basketball rivalry, but extends to almost all sports and many other forms of achievement. The most notable examples of this rivalry are the October 6, 2001 Cold War and the record-setting December 11, 2010 Big Chill at the Big House. Both teams are members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and intend to be inaugural hockey members of the Big Ten Conference when it begins play during the 2013–14 season.

Michigan currently leads the series, which began on January 24, 1925, 138–123–18 as of 17 November 2011 (2011 -11-17).[1] The teams are scheduled to play at least four times during the 2010–11 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season. The teams split the 2010–11 season series 2–2.[2] The regular home arenas for the teams are Yost Ice Arena (capacity 6637) and Munn Ice Arena (capacity 6470). However, the teams often play games on neutral sites and have played at least once per year since 1990 at the Joe Louis Arena (capacity 20,066).[3] The teams generally alternate years in which they hold a home game there. The last contest at "The Joe" was on January 29, 2011.[2] The next contest there will be February 11, 2012.[4]
