- Mile 30 village
-
Mile 30 village is a village that is situated 30 kilometers south of Rundu, on the same road as mile 10 and 20 village an its just after mile 20 village you just pass a smaller village called sitenda then, mile 30 village. They are all in the Okavango region of Namibia. This village does not have many people living there. In the village is a school, some shops and a clinic; people go there when they are sick, they could not make it to go to town for treatment because they do not have money for transport. Their forests have fruits like oranges and some other similar sort of stuffs that they sell, when they have grown to people coming from town. Because this village is situated, alongside the high way road, from Rundu to Windhoek. The little money they earn from their sales is used to pay for their children’s school fees.
The people of this village mainly depend on subsistence farming, whereby the surplus from farming is mainly used to feed the family. Farming in this area is done on a small scale, because they don’t have the equipment to do things on a large scale like the commercial farmers. Their farming is quite successful because of the oxen they have that they uses for ploughing, and for transporting their farm produce from their fields. The soil in this area is said to be very fertile; their crops grow well and produce more crops when they harvest. People in this area have started to develop a community conservancy aimed at protecting the wildlife in their area. Because they have realized that their wild animals are being killed a lot by the people within their community. They are creating a joint/link with the town council to bring them some developments and help their community grow.
The majority of the males in this area carve wood crafts, which they sell to tourists in Okahandja, to help them raise money for their children’s school fees and keep their families lives going. That is usually done when all the work from the farms is done; then the males proceed to come sell their crafts in other towns where tourists usually come.
The good thing about this village is that it has humble people; they like working together in order to help everyone who is living there. Farming is what help them to make a living, since the majority of the people in that village are not educated, so haven't got qualifications. The people of this area and the activities that take place there, is what this village is recognized for in the Okavango region.
