Origins

Ethnic Ethiopians are one of the nearly 80 ethnic groups of the horn of Africa country and are found in every regional state of Ethiopia. According to the Ethiopian scholar and author Teshome Borago, who coined the term "Ethnic Ethiopians," they are compromised of all mixed people of Ethiopia who "share a common descent, common fate and common heritage."

Some of the high profile Ethiopian people in history include Poet Laureate Tsegay Gabre-Madhin, Olympian Abebe Bikila, Emperor Eyasu V, Araya Selassie Yohannes, singer Tilahun Gessesse, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Emperor Haile Selassie and Judge Birtukan Mideksa.

Demographics

According to an unscientific survey carried to estimate their numbers, the highest percentage of participants suggested that mixed Ethnic Ethiopians are around 30% of the total Ethiopian population.[1] While Ethnic Ethiopians do not have one common religion, they have more religious homogeneity than other traditional ethnic groups like Gurage and Oromo (who have nearly 50-50 percent Islam to Christian ratio). Due to most mixed people being found in the Christian dominated urban settlements of Ethiopia, the majority of them adhere to the said religion.

Though mixed people can be found in every corner of the country, they are mostly located in the urban and the Ethiopian highlands that mainly surrounded the former province of Shewa. According to Mr. Borago,

Ethnic Ethiopians live in every region of the country but they are most densely found in the urban areas and in the thousands of rural market towns of the country due to historical migration, commercial integration and military events like conquests between and among southerners like Sidamas, Gurages, Oromos as well as northerners.[2]
